UAE window tint law: how dark can your car windows be?

Updated 19 Oct 2026

Short answer: Under the UAE Federal Traffic Law, most private vehicles may have up to 50% tint on side and rear windows (trucks and taxis are excluded). Reflective or mirrored films are not allowed. Windshield rules are stricter and reports differ by emirate, some allow only a strip at the top, so confirm with your emirate's police before tinting the windshield.

Side and rear windows

The federal limit for side and rear windows was raised from 30% to 50%, and Dubai Police have confirmed it applies to all vehicle types except trucks and taxis. Choose the shade with the garage and keep the film's specification sheet.

The windshield

Police have warned against tinting the windshield because it obstructs the driver's view, while some reports allow a strip at the top. Rules can differ between emirates, so check with your local police before tinting it. Rolling sunshades used on the windshield while driving are also treated as a violation.

Reflective and blurred films

Reflective, mirrored or blurred glass is banned on car windows, whatever the percentage.

Heat-rejection films

A lighter film can still block a lot of heat: ceramic and nano tint films reject infrared heat without being very dark. Ask the garage about heat rejection, not just darkness, and about the warranty on fading and bubbling.

Penalties

Tinting above the permitted level, or tinting a vehicle that is not allowed to be tinted, can lead to fines and vehicle impoundment. Exemptions exist for some medical cases through the authorities.
