PPF vs ceramic coating in the UAE: which does your car need?

Updated 19 Oct 2026

Short answer: PPF is a thick, self-healing film that physically blocks stone chips and scratches. Ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer that adds gloss, repels water and dirt and resists UV, but it does not stop chips. On UAE highways many owners put PPF on the front of the car (or the whole body) and ceramic coating over the rest, or over the film.

What PPF does

Paint protection film is a clear polyurethane (TPU) film applied panel by panel. It absorbs impacts from sand and gravel, and better films self-heal light swirl marks with heat, useful in the UAE, where cars are exposed to sun most of the year. It can be gloss, matte or coloured.

What ceramic coating does

A ceramic or graphene coating chemically bonds to the clear coat. It makes the paint glossier and slicker, so dust, bird droppings and water spots wash off more easily, and it adds UV resistance. It is a few microns thick, so it will not stop a stone chip.

Which to choose

Choose PPF if you drive long highway distances, have a new or high-value car, or want to protect resale value. Choose ceramic coating if your priority is gloss and easy cleaning. Many garages offer packages that combine both: film on high-impact areas and coating everywhere else.

Questions to ask the garage

Which film or coating brand and grade is it? What does the warranty cover (yellowing, peeling, cracking) and for how long? Full body or front end only? How long will the car be at the garage, and how should it be washed afterwards?
